rBGH's
I am here to inform you of my existance and to tell you about rBGH's.
rBGH is short for Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone and is produced by
the monsanto company. Because it is a synthetic copy of the hormone cows
have that makes them produce milk, cows injected with it produce up to
15% more milk, a very un needed extra 15%. rBGH's are harmful to both
cows and humans, and the fact that they have been approved by the fda
(in 1993) is appalling considering that those who were on the fda board
were former employees of monsanto, and that several articles/essays on
the harmful side effects of rBGH's were delayed from being published in
order to make sure that the fda did not read them. In cows the hormone
causes infection of the uder (in 79% of cows injected with rBGHS) which
results in a greater need for antibiotics, reduced pregnancy rates,
uterine and ovary problems and digestive disorders. the nutritional
value of milk is also hurt by the hormone. Milk from rBGH cows has less
protein and vitamins, vitamins most americans dont' recieve enough of to
begin with. It also causes milk to go sour before it's time due to the
increased amount of antibiotics in the milk. Those antibiotics can not
possibly have a positive effect on the people drinking the milk. The fda
even approved this shady hormone before any results were published on
how it effects humans. Perhaps who is hurt most by this chemical are
farmers-- some of my favorite people. Farmers are hurt in several ways;
1) family farmers can not compete with the huge corporations who can
afford rBGH and other farm equipment and thus really struggle to stay in
the race, or have to give up their farming methods, which have often
been handed down from generation to generation and work for these
companies. will it really hurt the ceo of monsanto or whichever the hell
huge dairy company if they don't make that extra 1 million and put up
with a "measely" sallary of 9 billion a year? 2) Even without rBGH's
america produces TOO MUCH milk-- several million dollars more than is
consumed, with the increased 15% of milk milk prices drop even lower and
cause even more family farms to reach poverty level. As of now, a
non-corporate farm household has an income of 28 thosand dollars--
almost at the poverty level-- which is terrible considering it's hardly
enough to raise a family on and that these people break their backs
working so hard on the land and animals they love so much. 3) also, the
gov spends nearly 10 million tax payer dollars just to sop up the left
over milk
also, there are even laws in states prohibiting people from stating if
their product is rBGH free-- when in fact, the good thing to do is just
the opposite, make it mandatory for dairy products to have labels
informing the consumer whether or not it contains rBGH and some possible
side effects if it does (sorta like cig boxes). This way, a consumer can
make the best desicion for himself- even if it is buying rBGH (i mean,
everyone knows cigs can kill ya, but people still smoke right?).
